Artists Statement

I am a Manx artist, currently working in the Isle of Man. Working with Film and Photography as means of documenting tactile, handmade works. Documenting craft as a means of gentle protest to highlight contemporary social and cultural concerns, such as the Syrian refugee crisis which was explored in the 2018 film Tentacles. Tentacles features over 100 hand knitted stands draped and wrapped around a performer to conceptually represent how people were donating unusable things and clothing to the crisis which in turn were actually causing more chaos. I used this as an opportunity to highlight one of the issues with how we as a first world society respond unhelpfully to crisis and the importance of understanding your impact on the world.

Previous works include: Tentacles (2018), Stitch (2018), Body Images series (2017), all of which use mixed media to approach issues in a sensitive way. The works have a focus on material and utilising it in a way which provokes an emotional response, to issues which have become desensitised by the continuous steam of mainstream media.

Growing up on an island influences my work heavily as I perhaps felt closed off from politics and global events. Moving to the multicultural city of Leicester to study a degree in Fine Art, allowed me to make work whilst being apart of a thriving community which celebrates diversity and the arts influence on current affairs. This was when my work transitioned into work which focuses on visually and conceptually highlighting issues using mixed media, which gives the work a sensitive quality when approaching sensitive issues.
